Salzburg: Services and Tourism Driving Purchasing Power

The city Salzburg, the Salzkammergut and the lake district help the Salzburg federal state maintain a high purchasing power of around 18,750 euros per year. Less prosperous municipalities are as much as 8,000 euros behind.

Salzburg boast the second highest purchasing power in the Austrian federal states ranking, following Vienna. Salzburg's economy is characterised by tourism, the service sector and agriculture. It is exactly the most touristically developed regions which have above-average purchasing power. These are mainly the city Salzburg, the townships in the Salzkammergut as well as those around the Salzburg lakes. For instance, the city Salzburg boasts a purchasing power index of 122 points per capita, Hof bei Salzburg around 115 points, Eugendorf 114.5, Untertauern 112.7 and Bad Gastein 112.3 points. The townships around Salzburg, such as Wals-Siezenheim and Bergheim, also have above-average purchasing powers.

At the bottom of the ranking are townships from the districts Sankt Johann im Pongau and above all Tamsweg. These rather remote townships with almost no tourism achieve only slightly over 70% of the average Austrian purchasing power. In absolute terms, the difference between these areas and the city Salzburg can be up to 8,000 euros of available income per year.
