Rewe rules the East of Austria

According to sales area shares Rewe is market leader in Austria`s Eastern counties Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland. Its competitor Spar controls all the other six counties in this ranking. This is the result of the latest RegioData study surveying all outlets of the Austrian food retail industry (more than 5 000 addresses). The survey includes all market participants with a supra-regional importance and more than five outlets.

In Tyrol, Vorarlberg, Salzburg, Carinthia, Styria and Upper Austria Spar is market leader regarding sales area shares. The Rewe group takes second place in all this counties, with the exception of Tyrol, where the local market participant MPreis takes the second place before Rewe on the third place.

In the Eastern counties Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland the Rewe group is market leader. The group with its sales divisions Billa, Merkur and Penny has the largest sales area in the food retail industry. Second largest player is Spar and the Tengelmann group with its food chain Zielpunkt is the third largest player in Vienna and in Burgenland. In Lower Austria the co-operative Markant with its food chains Nah&Frisch and Unimarkt takes in the third place regarding sales area.

The fourth place in Vienna and Lower Austria is occupied by the discount retail chain Hofer, in Burgenland this place is taken by Adeg. The fifth place in Vienna is taken by discounter Lidl whereas in Lower Austria Tengelmann and in Burgenland Markant take the fifth position in the ranking.
