After the USA, Europe is ranked among the biggest markets for organic products globally. The boom in the organic foods industry can largely be explained by discount stores and supermarkets incorporating organic products into their range of goods, in order to meet the growing demand. Furthermore, the difference in prices between traditional and organic foods is not as big compared to several years ago.
This seemingly healthy lifestyle, however also triggers a significant problem: due to the rapidly growing demand for organic foods many countries, especially Germany have to rely on imports. Even some Nordic countries are compelled to import organic foods, since their domestic organic production is rather low.
A clear trend regarding the purchase of organic products in Europe can be observed: there is a dramatic north-east divide. On the one hand this is due to the distribution of purchasing power; on the other hand it is correlated to the conservation of values such as health consciousness, ecology, and sustainable economic activities of the population. Switzerland generates the biggest revenue per capita per year from organic products namely € 205, which account for 7% of the total food sales per capita. Denmark is ranked third with expenditures of € 162 per capita per year, followed by Luxembourg with € 155 per capita per year. Austria is placed fifth after Liechtenstein (€ 134) with € 125, accounting 5.6% of the total food sales per capita. Germany is ranked seventh with € 94 per capita, after Sweden (€ 105).
