Europe is getting older

In 50 years there will be 130 Mio people living in the EU that are older than 65 years. This corresponds to an increase in the 65+ population from currently 17% to about 30%.

In absolute numbers the most people of this age group will be found in Germany. With an expected number of about 23,6 Mio people over 65 years the so called "old-age dependency ratio", defined as the number of old dependent people by the labour force population, will reach 56,4%. A high old-age dependency will also be measured for Spain and Italy that both have high life-expectancy rates.

Austria will have a population of well above 9 million in 2050 whereof 28% will be older than 65 years. The highest increase in population is expected for Vienna and Lower Austria due to migration. In the eastern part of Austria also the fraction of 65+ population will increase. Vienna, however, is an exception since the ratio of 65+ will not increase that fast, also mainly due to migration. Vienna is therefore going to be the demographically youngest province in Austria.
