Tourism strengthens Purchasing Power

The recent analysis of purchasing power in Austria shows that tourism is an important factor regarding wealth of the population in those regions that are structurally and industrially weak.
Studies show that a tourist is spending more than 180,- Euro in average per overnight stay.
Therefore the highest purchasing power numbers can be found in western Austria in the well-known tourism regions of Tyrolia and Vorarlberg. Winter tourism especially is for these small mountain villages an absolute booster for purchasing power. Without these earnings the average income would not even reach half of what it is now.
But due to tourism every inhabitant of Lech has approx. 24.700,- Euro per year at his disposal. The population living in the affluent suburbs around Vienna have around 25.500,- Euro per year whereas a citizen of the first district in Vienna has more than 36.000,- Euro per year on average. In comparison the average value for Austria would be 17.750,-.
That shows that there are siginificant differences even among the wealthiest municipalities in Austria. The map shows the three top-ranking municipalities of Lech, St.Anton and Ischgl as well as tourism data for 2008.
