Purchasing Power Streams To and From Austria: Up By 1.5 Billion Euros

Every country, every township and every trade zone is looking to attract and bind more purchasing power. For Austria, the net result could not be any more positive: Austrians spend around 1.06 billion euros on retail in neighbouring countries, but consumers from Austria's neighbouring countries spend about 2.58 billion euros in its domestic market. This yields a plus of some 1.5 billion euros for Austria.
German consumers weigh especially heavily in these statistics. With total expenditures of around 1.17 billion euros, they make up the lion's share of the 2.58 billion total. Even if the figures are divided into expenses in border areas and tourist spending, it remains clear that German tourists spend the most money in Austria, with the total at 924 million euros per year. The Italians are the second most important consumer group with 454 million euros, although the majority is spent not by Italian tourists but in border areas. In other words: Italian shopping tourism continues to be important in Austria.
Conversely, Austrians spend the most money in Italy and Germany. They leave around 195 million euros in border areas in Italy, 152 million in areas bordering Germanyand around 150 million along the Czech-Austrian border.
