Poland achieves Portugals selling space density

Some of the CEE countries have already reached the level of Western Europe referring to selling space density. Austria also has a very high level.

One of the highest selling space densities (square meters per 1 000 people) can be found in the USA (more than 3 000 sqm per 1 000 people). The lowest density exists in a country like Aserbaidschan with 20 sqm per 1 000 people. Basically the more inhabitants one country has and the less developed it is, the lower is the respective selling space density.

But: Poland has far more inhabitants and is economically less developed than Portugal, but still has a selling space density similar to the one in Portugal. The Czech Republic with about 10,5 millions inhabitants has only about 600 000 inhabitants less than Greece, but when it comes to selling space density this value is as high as in Greece.

These developments have to do with the strong growth of the retail sector in the CEE region in the last years. The European peak will not be reached so soon (Austria has 1 700 sqm/1 000 people, Switzerland 1 850 sqm/1 000 people). But in some years Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia will have overtaken many Western European countries.
